It’s That Time… My Firstborn Is Heading Off to College

It’s that time.

This fall, my firstborn will be heading off to college. While it pains my heart to think he won’t be under my roof every day, I am incredibly excited for his future and the adventures that lie ahead. Watching him grow into the young man he is today has been one of life’s greatest blessings, and now it’s time for the next chapter.

If you know me, you know I love a beautifully decorated and comfortable home. While a dorm room may never feel exactly like home, I wanted to help create a space that feels welcoming, comfortable, and functional for him as he begins this exciting journey.

After plenty of research (and a little bit of mom planning), here are my top dorm room must-haves for college students for peek college living!

1. Upholstered Headboard

A dorm room can feel cold and institutional. An upholstered headboard instantly softens the space and makes it feel more like home. Many dorm-friendly headboards also include pockets for storing phones, books, chargers, and other essentials.

2. Quality Bedding

Comfort starts with a good night’s sleep.

Don’t forget:

  • Mattress topper or mattress pad
  • Soft sheets
  • Comfortable comforter
  • Extra blanket for cold dorm rooms
  • Pillow protectors and pillowcases

Trust me, dorm mattresses aren’t known for luxury.

3. Bedside Caddy

When space is limited, a bedside caddy becomes invaluable. It’s the perfect place to store a phone, headphones, chargers, glasses, snacks, and late-night study essentials.

4. Mini Fridge

Whether it’s protein drinks, leftovers, bottled water, or late-night snacks, a mini fridge is one of the most used items in any dorm room.

5. Desk Lamp

Many college students find themselves studying long after their roommate has gone to sleep. A good desk lamp provides focused lighting without disturbing the rest of the room.

6. Power Strip with USB Ports

You can never have too many outlets in a dorm room. Between laptops, phones, tablets, gaming systems, and chargers, a quality surge protector with USB ports is a must.

7. Laundry Hamper

Choose one that’s easy to carry and durable enough to survive countless trips to the laundry room.

8. Storage Bins

Under-bed storage bins are one of the easiest ways to maximize limited dorm space. They’re perfect for extra clothes, shoes, toiletries, and seasonal items.

9. Fan

Dorm rooms can get warm. A small fan helps keep the room comfortable and provides a little white noise for sleeping.

10. Command Hooks

From backpacks and hats to towels and jackets, Command Hooks help students stay organized without damaging dorm walls. Grab Command strips for other hangings.

Final Thoughts

As excited as I am for this next season, I’ll admit it’s bittersweet. Watching your child leave home is one of the hardest and most rewarding milestones of parenthood.

My goal isn’t just to furnish a dorm room—it’s to create a space where he feels comfortable, supported, and ready to thrive as he begins this new adventure.

If you’re preparing to send a son or daughter off to college this fall, I’ve put together my complete list of favorite dorm room essentials. Be sure to check it out and hopefully make move-in day just a little easier.
